Lorica (breastplate) of Saint Patrick

I arise today Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity, Through a belief in the Threeness, Through confession of the Oneness Of the Creator of creation. I arise today Through the strength of Christ's birth and His baptism, Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial, Through the strength of His resurrection... Continue Reading →

None like you

And our God is not a God to merely believe, but to experience, not to only believe in, but be held by. A God who not only breaks for you — but breaks with you, a God to not only have creeds about —  but to have communion with, a God who not only who... Continue Reading →

An invitation

I am part of an online Bible study and you are invited. I've actually been doing one for a while with 2-3 other ladies from Santa Barbara. When I temporarily left that beautiful place behind in 2013 (blame the husband) I wanted to continue studying and meeting, and as it happens, I work for a company... Continue Reading →

Sufjan Stevens on Religion

Sufjan Stevens is one of my favorite artists – and now I’m happy to find that he is also always ready to give a reason for the hope that is within him – with gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15)
His answers to the rather sharp and pointed questions are accurate and relevant to the world in which we find ourselves.

Jeremy Allen from The Quietus interviews Sufjan Stevens about his new album The Age of Adz and his religious beliefs:

Being an artist of some repute do you find the calling to spread the Good News sits awkwardly with your profile? Is it difficult?

SS: Not necessarily, you know, I think the Good News is about grace and hope and love and a relinquishing of self to God. And I think the Good News of salvation is kind of relevant to everyone and everything.

I find as I get older due to a sequence of events spirituality becomes more intriguing, though having been indoctrinated with the hard line dogma that I’d go to hell if I didn’t follow certain practices and believe very specific things, I was quite angry about Christianity for a while.

SS: Oh dear.

I suppose you could call it Protestant guilt.

SS: The church is an…

Image is everything

This is by far the most misunderstood part of Christianity – the popular (albeit incorrect) belief that you have to be good to get into Heaven.
“Being a Christian isn’t about trying not to sin. It’s about total and complete transformation of life.
It’s about seeking righteousness above everything else.”

I read something on a blog over the weekend that made me realize even more why we have such a hard time walking in righteousness.

Someone posed the question, and I’m paraphrasing here, “Why did God create man so weak and sinful?”

My answer to that is simple. He didn’t.

Gen 1:27-28 says:

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

Then verse 31:

Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

There is no evil…
